How to Update Your Aadhaar Details Online and Stay Safe Doing It
Quick Answer

Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP, select Update Aadhaar Online, choose the field to update, upload a supporting document, and pay Rs 50 online. Name, address, DoB, gender, and email can all be updated this way; mobile number updates require an Enrolment Centre visit.

Key Takeaways

  • Address, name, date of birth, gender, and email can be updated online at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in for Rs 50.
  • Mobile number updates cannot be done online — you must visit a UIDAI-authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
  • UIDAI never calls, SMSes, or emails asking you to share your OTP — any such message is a scam.
  • Always use the official myAadhaar portal or the mAadhaar app; avoid third-party websites claiming to update Aadhaar.

What can you update online versus in person?

UIDAI, the authority that manages Aadhaar, allows certain demographic updates through its self-service portal myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Here is a quick reference:

    • Can be updated online: Address, Name, Date of Birth (limited to once, with supporting proof), Gender, Email address
    • Requires Aadhaar Enrolment Centre visit: Mobile number, Biometrics (fingerprints and iris scan)

For mobile number updates, locate your nearest centre using the centre-locator at appointments.uidai.gov.in. The fee at the centre is Rs 100 including GST.

    Watch out

Dozens of unofficial websites have names like aadhaar-update-online.in or aadhaar-address-change.com. These are not operated by UIDAI. Some charge Rs 200-500 and may harvest your personal details or your OTP. The only official self-service portal is myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (notice: no hyphens, no extra words). The only official UIDAI app is mAadhaar, available on Google Play and the App Store.

    Documents you will need

Each field update requires a specific proof document. Here are the most commonly needed ones:

    • Address update: Bank statement or passbook (last 3 months), utility bill (electricity/water/gas, last 3 months), rental agreement, or any government-issued letter with your address
    • Name update: PAN card, passport, driving licence, voter ID, or any government certificate showing the correct legal name
    • Date of birth update: Birth certificate, SSLC/10th marksheet, passport (only documents with your printed DoB are accepted)
    • Gender update: No document required — declaration is sufficient
    • Email update: No document required — your email address is verified by OTP

Documents must be scanned as clear, uncompressed JPEG or PDF files under 2 MB each. Handwritten documents are not accepted.

    Step-by-step: updating address online

Address is the most commonly updated field. The steps below cover address; the process for other fields is similar.

    1

    Open the myAadhaar portal

Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in on a browser. Click Login at the top right. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the CAPTCHA shown on screen.

    2

    Log in with OTP

Click Send OTP. The OTP will be sent to the mobile number currently linked to your Aadhaar. This is important: if your linked mobile number is inactive or unavailable, you cannot log in online. Enter the 6-digit OTP within 10 minutes of receiving it.

    3

    Select Update Aadhaar Online

After login, you will see a dashboard with several options. Click Update Aadhaar Online. You will be shown the fields available for online update. Tick the checkbox next to Address (or whichever field you need to update).

    4

    Enter the updated address

A form will appear with fields for House/Flat Number, Street/Road, Locality, District, State, and PIN Code. Fill in the new address carefully. The address you enter here must match your supporting document exactly, including spelling. Any mismatch is grounds for rejection.

    5

    Upload your proof of address

Select the document type from the dropdown — for example, Bank Statement or Electricity Bill — then upload the scanned file. UIDAI’s system will check that the file is clear. Avoid photographs taken at an angle; place the document flat on a table and photograph it directly from above.

    6

    Pay the update fee

The fee for each online update request is Rs 50 (inclusive of GST), payable via UPI, net banking, debit card, or credit card. After payment, you receive an update request number (URN) on screen and by SMS. Save this number.

    7

Track the status of your request

Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Check Aadhaar Update Status. Enter your URN to see whether your request is under review, approved, or requires additional documents. Processing typically takes 5-10 working days. You will receive an SMS once the update is complete.

    Pro tip

After your update is approved, download your updated e-Aadhaar as a password-protected PDF from the portal. The password is the first four letters of your name in uppercase followed by your birth year — for example, if your name is Kavya and you were born in 1990, the password is KAVY1990. Store this PDF in DigiLocker for easy retrieval anywhere in India.

    Common problems

    • OTP not received: This usually means your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, or the number is inactive. In this case, you must visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre to update your mobile number first, then return online.
    • Update request rejected due to document mismatch: UIDAI’s system checks the address or name text against your uploaded document using OCR. If your bank statement shows Bengaluru but you typed Bangalore, it may reject the request. Use exactly the spelling shown in your document.
    • Payment made but URN not received: Wait up to 2 hours. If still not received, contact UIDAI at 1947 (toll-free, available 7 AM to 11 PM) with your payment transaction ID.
    • Portal showing Update limit reached for name or DoB: UIDAI currently allows name updates a maximum of two times and date-of-birth updates only once over your lifetime. If you have reached the limit, a visit to an Enrolment Centre with an affidavit may be required.

How to protect yourself from Aadhaar scams

UIDAI has confirmed that it never calls, messages, or emails residents asking for an OTP, Aadhaar number, or bank details. If you receive such a call, disconnect immediately. Common scam patterns to watch for:

    • Callers claiming your Aadhaar is suspended or blocked and asking you to share an OTP to reactivate it
    • WhatsApp messages with a link to an unofficial Aadhaar update portal
    • Local agents at photocopy shops who offer to update Aadhaar for Rs 300-500 — if they insist on your OTP, they are committing identity theft

You can lock your Aadhaar biometrics at any time from the myAadhaar portal under Lock/Unlock Biometrics — this prevents anyone from using your fingerprints at a banking kiosk without your permission.
